SU Carburetor Identification.
SU has produced hundreds of carburetors of the last century and the all differ in detail from each other.
For the home-mechanic it is often almost impossible to determine what he (or she!) has at hand.
To make the process of determining what what carburetor you have, we have compiled this simple guide.
The list goes by visual features of the different types and we have created click-able links that will take you directly that carburetor's parts page.
We have limited the list to the most popular models in order to make it not more complicated than necessary.
The SU H-type carburetor

The H-type is identified by the large bolt that secures the float bowl to the carburetor body.
Also noteworthy are the long brass levers at the bottom.
The H-type was built with 5 throttle valve diameters:
H1, H2, H4, H6 and H8
The throttle diameters at the engine flange measure as follows:
The SU HS-type carburetor
The SU HS type carburetor is identified a flexible, steel-braided, fuel line that runs from the float bowl to the jet at the bottom of the carburetor body.
The HS-type was built with 4 throttle valve diameters:
HS2, HS4, HS6 and HS8
The throttle diameters at the engine flange measure as follows:
The SU HD-carburetor
The HD-type carburetor is identified by the 4 screws that attach the float bowl to the bottom of the carburetor body.
The HD-type was built with 3 throttle valve diameters:
HD4, HD6 and HD8

The SU HIF-carburetor
The HIF-series is characterized by the fact that the float chamber is an integral part of the carburetor body and has a flat cover at the bottom.
The HIF-type was built with 5 throttle valve diameters:
HIF4, HIF6, HIF7, HIF38 and HIF44
